Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park, one of the best-known parks in California, is especially appreciated by avid hikers because of its many scenic hiking trails. The park is about three miles outside Santa Cruz. Annually, nearly a million people from all over the world visit the park to see its redwood trees.

Big Basin Redwoods State Park, 20 miles from Henry Cowell Park, is another state park that protects dense redwood forest. Before the 2020 CZU fire that scorched the entire 18,000 acres, park staff welcomed visitors to the many trails and 150 camp sites. Currently only the Rancho Del Oso section of the park has reopened to the public where the Marsh Trail provides an engaging wedlands experience. State Parks anticipates another area of the park reopening in the summer of 2022. .
